A free system-wide equaliser for Windows
Windows has no built-in EQ. Here is what the options actually are, why most 'equalisers' only affect their own player, and how to shape everything your PC plays.
Search for a Windows equaliser and most results are media players with a slider panel attached. They equalise their own playback and nothing else — the browser, the game and the call all come out untouched. What people usually want is the opposite: one curve, applied to everything that reaches the headphones.
Why that is harder than it sounds
Windows mixes every application's audio in a system process before sending the result to your device. To equalise everything, you have to put a filter inside that process. Windows supports this — it is called an audio processing object, an APO — but it is not something a normal application can simply switch on. It has to be registered against the endpoint, and the audio engine has to load it.
That is why so few equalisers do it, and why the ones that do involve more setup than a checkbox.
The real options
Equalizer APO. The long-standing free answer, and genuinely powerful. You install it, pick your device, reboot, and then describe your filters — traditionally by editing a configuration file, or through Peace, a separate interface for it. Excellent results, an unwelcoming first hour.
Your headset's own software. If you have a SteelSeries, Logitech or Razer headset, its suite probably includes an EQ. It works, and it typically only applies to that headset — change device and the curve is gone.
Player-level EQ. Spotify, VLC and foobar2000 all have one. Fine if you only ever listen in that one app; useless the moment sound comes from somewhere else.
Soundscape. Ships its own APO, so the filter runs in the same place Equalizer APO's does — inside the Windows audio engine, applying to everything — but you set it by dragging bands on a curve and hearing the change as you drag.
Practical settings
Most headphones need less than people expect. A few decibels is a lot; +12 dB is not a preset, it is distortion.
- Voices too quiet in games or film. A gentle lift around 2–4 kHz does more for intelligibility than raising the whole volume.
- Boomy, muddy bass. Cut rather than boost — a small dip around 200–300 Hz usually clears it, where adding treble just makes everything louder.
- Harsh, fatiguing after an hour. A narrow cut somewhere between 6 and 8 kHz.
- Compare honestly. Toggle the EQ off and on at matched loudness. Anything louder sounds better for the first few seconds, which is how people end up with a curve they do not actually prefer.
One curve, or one per device
Headphones and speakers want different corrections, so a single global curve is a compromise the moment you own both. Soundscape keeps a profile per output device and follows whichever one you are using.
